Suunto Core Altimeter: The SAR Standard

The Suunto Core has been a standard issue piece of kit in mountain rescue and alpine operations for over two decades. It is not a watch trying to be a field instrument — it is a field instrument that happens to be worn on a wrist.

The storm alarm function is the single most operationally valuable feature. The Core monitors barometric pressure continuously and alarms when pressure drops at a rate consistent with incoming severe weather. In mountain environments, this alarm has saved lives. Full stop.

The altimeter logging capability allows you to track elevation profile over time — useful for route verification, for understanding your actual vertical gain versus planned, and for post-op debrief. Combined with the digital compass, you have a complete navigation suite on your wrist.

The honest limitations are significant for non-mountaineering use: 30m water resistance rules out any water operations, the digital-only display is slower to read than an analog face, and there is no atomic time sync. The Core makes trade-offs in favor of altimeter precision and durability.
